Original Vintage - HELL DRIVERS - Quad - 1957. With its dynamic graphics by Angelo Casselon, and printed by Charles Reed Ltd, using the traditional Stone Lithograph methods of the period: its rich, bold, matt-finish inks, on heavier matt paper stock - creating something bordering on a'porous/3-D' quality. It's a very rare Quad poster indeed - especially in mint condition - and perhaps is one of only a (v small). Handful surviving: All combined, making it.

An important design-pop-cultural artefact in its own right. And, as it was always recognised as an exceptionally good design - even in its day. And, was promoting such a popular/well-received movie - its rarity might be regarded as a little surprising..

Hell Drivers remains one of the very best movies of this action/drama genre to come from a British studio during this prolific period. With a great script - based on the truck driving experiences of its writer, John Kruse - and the confident - just-out-of-Hollywood - direction of Cy Enfield (ZULU). Shot in a wide-screen B&W - to both provide a more atmospheric film-noir feel - and also a more dramatic effect during the numerous outdoor/night time action scenes. Also with a stellar cast - including some of the most accomplished British cinema actors of the time: Stanley Baker, Patrick McGoohan, Herbert Lom, Sid James, Gordon Jackson, Norman Hartnell, Alfie Bass - and a still relatively unknown, newcomer, Sean Connery. For the post-war cinema-going public, the film provided lots of gritty intense action - suspense - and not a few thrills n spills.

Rivalry over tonnage bonuses & dancehall gals. With the backdrop of a poorly regulated haulage & road building industry during a post-war boom time.. And has been in my possession ever-since.

The intention was always to get it linen/paper-backed. (a simple job as it requires no restoration). & framed for the home. But as it's never happened - perhaps its now better for someone else to enjoy it.

Interestingly, not long after acquiring the poster, I came across a. (not the usual'coffee table' variety).

I seem to recall it was accompanied by a small b&w image - in a book that otherwise contained very few images. And although, the collectors and enthusiasts of Hammer Horror Quads may choose to disagree with that conclusion - I'm confident they'd be happy to concede that this poster is still pretty special..
